On Friday, February 24th, 2023, the fraudsters called a senior citizen from Vreden and pretended to be “police”. As in many similar cases, the fraudsters pretended that a relative of the person called had caused a serious traffic accident in which one person had already died. A high deposit is now due. The perpetrators made sobbing noises in the background.

The victim kept the fraudster on the line permanently and sent a taxi to pick up the victim and drive her to Dorsten to hand over the money. The perpetrators also maintained constant contact with the victim during the journey. Using flimsy arguments, they asked the woman to keep the matter secret and not to inform her relatives - then the case could be kept out of the newspaper.

Continuation of the shock call scam: hand over a large sum of money - twice

In Dorsten, the victim handed the cash to a woman who is described as follows: around 55 years old, around 170 tall, slim, wears a coat, speaks broken German.

When she returned home, her partner reported that “the police” had called again and said that another bail was required because a second person had died in the accident. The partner had already obtained the money and the injured party took a taxi back to Dorsten. Another woman was waiting for her there and she gave the money to her. This perpetrator is described as follows: approx. 40 years old, “secretary type”, slim, dark trousers, knee-length boots.

The injured party also had to pay for the taxi rides. The taxi driver is described as follows: around 50 years old, corpulent, thin hair, wearing glasses, wearing jeans and a leather jacket. He spoke German without an accent, but at times made phone calls in a language the injured party did not know.

The police advise talking about what happened

The police once again advise families to educate themselves about this and similar scams and to make arrangements. For example, it can make sense:

  • ALWAYS call family members or the police to protect yourself
  • to get a new phone number
  • not to list his telephone number in telephone books.
