Age verification and ID verification technologies for social media users need an overhaul. That's the finding of a survey by Jumio , an online mobile payments and identity verification company that offers card and ID scanning and validation products for mobile and web transactions.

Only 37 percent of respondents are confident that social media sites protect minors from age-restricted content through digital ID verification.

Priority age verification

While 60 percent agreed that parents and guardians have the ultimate responsibility for protecting their children, 80 percent said social media sites should make age verification their top priority. Online gaming, gambling and betting sites also performed poorly in the survey, with less than half of respondents saying such platforms adequately protect children through age verification.

A dramatic example of the dangers faced by young social media users has recently emerged. A London coroner concluded that Molly Russell, a 14-year-old girl, "died from an act of self-harm while suffering from depression and the negative effects of online content," according to The Guardian. Russell accessed graphic suicide-related content and was bombarded with similar information for months.

Stake.com under fire

In the world of gambling, Stake.com, a company that has partnerships with Premier League team Everton FC and Canadian pop star Drake, is coming under fire. National restrictions on crypto gambling and age restrictions in the UK are said to have been circumvented.

An Observer reporter uploaded a photo of a pack of lozenges as alleged proof of age. The account was only blocked after 48 hours.
