The claim

Photos are circulating of toilets at the University of Innsbruck with signs identifying the toilets as “all-gender toilets”.

Our conclusion

The signs actually hung in front of some of the toilets at the University of Innsbruck, but were put up by unknown people.

Many companies and universities now have unisex toilets that can be used by men, women and trans people. What was still a bit of a stir in the “Ally McBeal” series over 20 years ago is now quite common. But some people are still bothered by this and wanted to cause more outrage with false signs at the University of Innsbruck.

The fuss about the wrong signs

Several photos of the fake signs are circulating on social media. For example, on January 20th, the “Ring Freiheitlicher Studenten Tirol” posted a photo of one of the signs on Facebook and was upset about it:

The sign reads: “ WC All-Gender. This toilet is open to everyone. A men's/ladies' toilet can be found nearby.

The RFS Tirol doesn't like this at all:

“It is clear to us: left-wing gender gaga has no place at our universities! Anyone who cannot even answer the simple question of whether they are a man or a woman hardly has the intellectual competence to answer scientific questions and therefore has no place at a university anyway.”

RFS on Facebook

There is also criticism that only men's toilets have received the new signage, which raises the question for the RFS as to whether men are not human. However, the RFS Tirol is wrong here, as the sign could also be seen on women's toilets, indicating that the next women's toilet was nearby.

Days later, however, the supposed excitement was gratefully spread by a relevant site (archived HERE ), a tabloid media (archived HERE ) and an Austrian politician (archived HERE ) to get upset about “Gender Gaga”.

On January 25th, the University of Innsbruck issued a clarification that these were fakes - which the sites, media and people linked above naturally ignored, so that the supposed excitement continued to generate excitement and clicks.

The statement from the University of Innsbruck

There are between 150 and 200 toilet rooms . A total of four of them have actually been unisex toilets for a long time and simply labeled “WC”. A new signage for some toilets as “WC All-Gender” with a large notice would make no logical sense, since there are already unisex toilets that no one was upset about.

The University of Innsbruck assumes a coordinated action that was continued: a short time later, the signs were covered with a sticker with the sentence “There are only two genders” (in German: There are only two genders).

In addition, the University of Innsbruck makes it clear that it is committed to diversity and gender equality and that neither women nor men are forced to go to toilets that they do not want to use. However, the signs attached do not come from the university, but were put up by unknown people.

Conclusion

Rating: FALSE

The signs actually hung in front of some of the toilets at the University of Innsbruck, but were put up by unknown people.

The last tweet in the statement from the University of Innsbruck also raises an interesting argument, namely that the discussion is actually absolutely pointless, since the signage basically describes a unisex toilet - and unisex toilets are also available on trains, for example. Airplanes and coaches - without anyone getting upset and demanding separate toilets.

The real joke of the strangers who put up the signs is the naming: probably no one would have been upset about the “unisex toilet” (which exists at the University of Innsbruck anyway). But now they call it the “all-gender toilet”, conservative sites and politicians are going crazy and are outraged about “gender gaga”.

Also interesting: According to a TikTok video, Defense Minister Lambrecht announced “today” that trans people in the Bundeswehr could not be deployed to the front in a war because there were no gender-appropriate toilets there.
However, the claim is fictitious. – No trans people in the BW because of toilets?
