The nationwide warning day will take place on Thursday, December 8th, 2022. For the first time, the federal government will also test cell broadcast, and an alarm will then appear on the cell phone regardless of whether the app is installed.

For the nationwide test alarm, the sirens will sound as a test on December 8th from 11:00 a.m. At the same time, information will appear via warning apps such as “Nina”, “Katwarn” and “Biwapp”. Cell broadcast is also being tested for the first time, so that mobile phones prepared for this can trigger an alarm even without any programs installed. The systems are tested, everyone should know what to do in an emergency.

Alarm via cell broadcast

Cell Broadcast sends the warning message to all terminal devices in selected mobile radio cells that are designed to receive such messages. Even if these are switched to silent, the alarm sounds. Only devices for which Cell Broadcast is activated are addressed; These must also not be switched off or set to flight mode.

The system is currently still in the testing phase. Active operation is planned for February 2023. Children and young people who have smartphones should be prepared for the test alarm by their legal guardians. Individual support for seniors may also be required. As a rule, settings have to be made in the mobile phone in order to be able to receive the test alarm. Further information on cell broadcast and the support of smartphone models as well as their discontinuation is published by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief : www.bbk.bund.de.

Information and instructions on what to do in an emergency

In an emergency, if the sirens are triggered, citizens should go to closed rooms, close windows and doors and turn on the radio. In the event of acute danger, information and instructions on how to behave are provided via radio (WDR 2 and Radio Neandertal). The emergency numbers 110 and 112 should only be dialed in emergencies! Only if citizens are sufficiently informed can they help themselves and others in dangerous situations.

Renewal of the siren network

Various sirens in Heiligenhaus have now been replaced with new high-performance electronic sirens, and more will follow. In an emergency, however, loudspeaker vehicles in Heiligenhaus also warn and inform affected areas. In addition, the Heiligenhaus fire department also provides information via its social media channels in the event of an emergency. On the warning day, the warning apps “Nina”, “Katwarn” and “Biwapp” designed for smartphones will also display a test alarm activated centrally by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief. Information is also disseminated in this way in the Mettmann district when damage occurs.

Consciousness and attention

The warning day not only serves to regularly test the warning systems, but in this way citizens can also become familiar with the siren signals and their meaning. Sirens are irreplaceable. Because their sound attracts attention and may wake the residents from their sleep. Especially at night, the television and radio are usually switched off and cell phones can be set to silent. The sound of a siren is independent of this.
