(Austria) The aim of the fraudsters: to create pressure, stir up fears and extort payments!

“Attention – we have received a report of a new scam via SMS via our platform rufnummernverkehrs.at. The text message informs you that a claim has allegedly not been paid and that the household contents will therefore be seized soon,” informs Dr. Klaus M. Steinmaurer, RTR's managing director for the telecommunications and postal department, explains: "The SMS naturally contain a dubious link that you should click on in order to be able to settle the supposedly outstanding claim immediately by means of payment."

Opening fraudulent SMS does not cause any damage

“But you shouldn’t be tempted to give even the slightest hint about your account details via the link provided,” warns Steinmaurer and urgently points out, “Don’t click on the link, don’t make a transfer, delete the SMS immediately! And under no circumstances should you comply with a request to install an app. It’s always malware!”

It is usually not possible to determine who the fraudsters of the automatically sent SMS are because the sender ID is fake. Therefore, tracking doesn't work either.

How do you recognize scam SMS?

“”Unfortunately, there is no magic formula for identifying fraudulent text messages. In general, it is advisable to be suspicious and pay attention to whether the SMS text has any anomalies such as strange URLs, spelling errors or special characters in inappropriate places in the text, etc. These can be indications that something is wrong,” Steinmaurer concludes.
