The claim
Allegedly the presenter Andrea Kiewel showed the Hitler salute together with the viewers of the ZDF television garden in solidarity with Ukraine.
Our conclusion
It is the beginning of an exercise with a mental coach in which the right arm is stretched forward (not diagonally upwards) at the beginning and the arm is then moved backwards. The scene is taken completely out of context.
According to Putin's opinion, and this is believed by many of his supporters in this country, Ukraine is ruled by Nazis, which is why this is not a war of aggression by Russia against Ukraine, but rather a “denazification” as part of a “special military operation”. Caught in this thought bubble, it is only logical for such people that the claim is true: Allegedly the presenter Andrea Kiewel showed the Hitler salute together with the viewers of the ZDF television garden in solidarity with Ukraine.
The sharepics for the claim
In total, we were able to identify three sharepics and screenshots on which the claim was spread:
The first image is a pure sharepic, the second, widespread image is the screenshots of a YouTube video, the third image is the screenshot of an article . It is unanimously claimed that a Hitler salute was shown on the ZDF television garden, and in the sharepic there is also an expression of solidarity with Ukraine.
What was actually seen in the scene
Everyone can see this for themselves, because not only the complete episode from June 5th (see HERE ), but also this scene as a single video (see HERE ) can be found in the ZDF media library. The overarching theme of the program was “Dare!”, it was about showing courage in different variations and crossing boundaries - and no, it wasn't about the limit of showing a Hitler salute!
In this scene, the mental coach Thomas Baschab, together with the presenter Andrea Kiewel and the audience, carried out an exercise:
Everyone should stand up, stretch their right arm forward (!) (not diagonally upward), then walk their arm backwards to the right.
From minute 3:46 in the short video, the exercise is carried out again; the popular screenshot also comes from this repetition of the exercise.
Summary
The scene was taken completely out of context by the sharepic, the video and the clickbait headline on a page and false claims were spread about it: Not a Hitler salute (for which the arm would have to be stretched a little more upwards), but simply just that an exercise by a mental coach.
