Deepfakes, videos or images produced with the help of artificial intelligence, are increasingly being used for blackmail and fraud, forging documents, manipulating the financial market, but also for disinformation.

Now Europol has announced that this technology can also hinder the work of the police and judiciary. For example, the judiciary could be deceived by using manipulated images or videos as supposed evidence.

Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more advanced. This makes it all the more challenging not to be deceived by this in police investigation work.

Criminal application examples

Europol provides insight into different methods criminals use. For example, blackmail attempts can be started with fake porn videos. Fraudsters also pose as superiors over the phone. The voices are processed by AI so that they sound completely real. Employees can, for example, be persuaded to make transfers.

The Corona crisis and increased home office work have created further starting points for the fraudulent use of deepfakes.

Europol report

Last week Europol released a report entitled “Facing Reality? Law Enforcement and the Challenge of Deepfakes” published. Various criminal usage examples are shown here. You also gain insight into the challenges facing law enforcement in detecting and preventing fraudulent deepfakes.

In order to counteract the further development of deepfake technology, Europol recommends automated programs to detect fakes in police authorities. Legislation should also keep pace with developments.
